Personality

Raijin. She has no surname, and prefers the nickname “Rai”. She can be unpredictable and ill-tempered at times, but tries her best not to take her bad moments out on others. Rai also has a bad habit of not thinking before taking action, and is prone to getting herself hurt.

Biography

Rai’s mother, Tomie, is a Lala-Hyur born and raised in Ul’dah. After her parents divorced, her mother decided to move back to Kugane, and Tomie, who was closer to her mother, decided to tag along.

Tomie noticed changes in her mother’s behavior years after the separation. She was more strict, demanding, and cared a lot about the small things she never cared for before. Her mother planted lies in her head with regard to her father, claiming that the man never cared for the both of them, so that Tomie wouldn’t run back to him when things got bad. When Tomie had enough, she ran away from her mother at age 19 and decided to be a full time sex worker at an alleyway brothel called The Spotlight. The owner and workers were quick to welcome her with open arms, and treated her like family.

Three years have passed and Tomie was a well loved and known worker at The Spotlight. Despite the fact that she was taking contraceptive pills regularly, she still got pregnant. Tomie assumed that her morning sicknesses came from bad hangovers the entire time. One of her coworkers made a joke about her being pregnant, but Tomie laughed it off, and claimed that it was unbelievable.

After a few months, the baby bump started to show. This discovery made Tomie panic and attempt to take her own life by overdosing. After a while of thinking and coming back to her senses, Tomie realized that she in fact does want to keep this baby, and hopes to give it a better childhood than she ever had.

Raijin's Childhood

Rai looked absolutely nothing like her mother. As she got older, Tomie couldn’t figure out exactly who the father of her child could be, but that didn’t stop her from loving Rai unconditionally. The environment of Rai's early childhood days wasn’t the best for a prepubescent child to be in.

School wasn’t a thing for her, she spent most of her days helping out with food and drinks at the brothel when she was old enough to form coherent sentences and do semi-complicated tasks. On the weekends though, Tomie took Rai to the local park, library (as an attempt to teach her how to read and write, but Rai was stubborn), or festivals to hang out with kids her age. Rai was considered “a troubled but good kid” by many. She had a hard time regulating her emotions, and would lash out at others for the smallest things, but always made sure to apologize in the end. Rai had a habit of saying weird things like how she’d “hear a voice in her head that wasn’t hers". She was also caught by her mother talking to herself many times, but Tomie always shrugged it off as a child simply playing with her imaginary friend.

When Rai was 15, a wealthy Au Ra man with a name she never cared to remember, who frequently visited The Spotlight and was courting her mother at the time, offered to take Tomie’s hand in marriage. Tomie was ecstatic to start this new life with a man she never thought she’d be interested in, but Rai was more than livid due to her prejudice towards this man. The owner of The Spotlight, Rai’s soon to be former home, threw a big farewell party for the two of them, and they all tearfully said their goodbyes. It took Rai a while to get used to her new life. She spent most of her time out in the garden, watching the fish swim in the pond. She wasn’t able to spend much time with her mother anymore, but her 12 year old step-brother, Genji, started to grow on her by this point.

Their first meeting was strained due to the both of them being stubborn. They avoided speaking or being near each other at any given chance, It wasn’t until after two months since Rai and Tomie’s arrival that they really started to pay mind to each other. Genji was out in the courtyard practicing his swordsman skills with a striking dummy, and Rai couldn’t help but feel entranced by his swift movements. Without thinking, she’d then strike up a conversation, asking him if he could teach her how to use a sword. Genji’s movement’s came to a stop, and he hesitantly complied with a voice so soft that Rai had never heard before. This would be the first time Rai fell in love without fully understanding what the concept of love is.

This arrangement would be the cause of Genji and Rai having a close bond. At noon after his classes, Genji would lead Rai to the estate library to help her learn how to read and write. In exchange for this, Rai would teach her step-brother how to cook and mix drinks (even though they already had maids to do the favor, but it’s always nice to learn just in case). Their father caught Genji teaching Rai how to wield the sword, and scolded him for doing so, because the path of a samurai was too “manly”. Therefore, the siblings made sure to sneak out during the late hours to spar.

Rai’s step-father began to set up arranged marriages for her, and sent her on dates with interested bachelors, most of them being twice her age. Tomie was dissatisfied with the idea, but her husband would disregard her feelings, saying that it was “Best for the family and Rai’s future”. The men he sent on dates with Rai would run away in the end because of her being too “intense” or “scary”. Father would secretly beat and torture Rai behind Tomie’s back in order to straighten her out and behave for potential bachelors, and Rai would never speak of what she had to go through to her mother due to fear of ruining their marriage.

By the time Rai was 17, she started to notice that her mother’s marriage was starting to fall apart. Father had been accused of infidelity multiple times due to a neighbor seeing him by The Spotlight many times, but he’d brush it off and tell Tomie not to believe anything that others would say, or else she’d go crazy. The two of them would argue nearly every night, and Tomie began to start sharing a room with her daughter like things used to be, until she made up her mind on forgiving her husband.

Their disagreements would eventually begin to get worse to the point where Father would lay his hands on Tomie or even force himself onto her. One night during the holiday season, the couple got into another feud that resulted in Father attempting to kill Tomie, but Rai, who was much more skilled with a sword, intervened and struck him down from the back in one blow, immobilizing him. Father opened his mouth to speak, attempting to spew insults at Rai. He couldn’t do or say anything but cough up blood, so Rai decided to put him out of his misery.

Tomie ran into her daughter’s arms and held her tight. The both of them fell to their knees, and for the first time in forever, Rai burst into tears. The pair quickly packed their bags and left the estate without looking back. Rai had insisted on alerting Genji, but her mother said no, just to be safe. The two of them snuck onto a boat that sailed to Limsa Lominsa, and from there on, they would settle down and move back to Ul’dah to work as waitresses at the Quicksands, and reunite with Tomie’s father.
